Compact Disc Layers

How a disc is made.

Graphics layer - Made from the inks used to place the graphics on the disc. This layer usually contains the artwork or identification of the artist on a music, game or DVD or computer disc. This layer is the most susceptible to scratches. Any scratch on this surface will permanently destroy the disc. The Disc Shield is placed over this layer to protect it from scratches, dings, and dents.

Lacquer Coating - applied above the reflective coating to seal it to the plastic disc and to level and prepare the printable surface for the application of the inks that make the graphics layer. This layer is clear and very thin. It does not provide any protection to the disc.

Reflective Coating - made from aluminum or gold, this coating is applied above the imprinted pits and reflects the laser beam back to the optical pickup. if this layer is scratched or holed, the disc is permanently ruined. This layer is very thin and does not provide any protection to the disc.

Plastic Disc - made from a polycarbonate plastic, the clear disc is stamped at the factory with many millions of tiny pits that are the actual ones and zeros of the digital information the disc contains. The disc is read from the bottom by beaming the laser light through the disc, and bouncing the beam off of the reflective coating that covers the tiny data pits. The laser beam then returns to the optical sensor that reads the minute variations in the intensity of the laser light caused by the data pits as the disc spins.

Disc ShieldWhy a Disc Shield Works

Disc Shields - made from a durable, clear laminate specifically designed for discs, the Disc Shield covers the entire label side of the disc to prevent scratches from reaching the graphics, lacquer, and reflective layers of the disc. This prevents the accidental removal or destruction of the important information on the disc. Disc shields are non-removable to assure that the protection will be a permanent part of the disc once applied.

Disc Shields are available as plain, clear shields, or can be customized with your personal or store information to permanently mark the disc as a part of your collection or as belonging to your store.

Security TagsSecurity Tags

Security tags are also available for those rental and retail stores using magnetic technology security systems. The tag, once placed beneath the Disc Shield, becomes a permanent, non-removable part of the disc. This will allow you to prevent theft losses from unscrupulous customers who would steal your valuable inventory. Don't let it happen to you! With a magnetic security tag and a custom disc shield, you raise your security level to provide the maximum possible protection to your discs. No more discs "walking out" on their own, and no more switching discs by the customers to replace a damaged one of their own.

Disc Repair and Resurfacing

Scratches, mars and marks on the bottom, plastic side of the disc can block the laser from returning to the optical sensor, making the disc unreadable! But scratches no longer have to mean the disc is permanently ruined. Now you can have your disc repaired for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Scratched discs can be completely resurfaced with a patented process that removes the scratch from the disc by carefully removing a thousandth of an inch of plastic from the damaged surface of the disc, leaving the disc clean and smooth. Your disc will look and play just like new again.

We must caution that not every disc can be repaired by this unique process. If the disc is chipped, cracked, warped, split or burned, it is damaged beyond repair. Please recycle. If the disc is scratched on the label side, it is damaged beyond repair. You can tell by holding the disc up to the light and looking for pinholes or lines in the disc. Please do not send any of the above discs to us, we cannot help them. But please do send us your discs that have scratches on the bottom plastic side. Most discs can even be repaired several times!
